"Sunset on the Grand" * triptyc (20" x 30" each panel; total view 20" x 90", cold press watercolor paper)
JAN SHAW KING, Watercolor Impressionist
"Being one with nature in the environment, painting with passion and awareness, capturing light, the challenge of working with watercolor in the open air and the stories about each experience are reasons why painting with watercolor en plein air is so exciting." ~ Jan Shaw King
Jan Shaw King's body of work is dedicated to the expression of light, natural shapes and reflections captured in a moment in time while painting en plein air.
Jan's landscapes and seascapes evolved into painting Impressionistic Watercolors as an expression of enlightenment, breathing life into her work, while each painting tells a story.
Jan's Western landscapes capture the breathtaking wonder of God's awesome creations, while her Lighthouse paintings offer symbols of light, hope and reflections of the past.
"Sunset on the Grand" When I spent an entire day along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, I witnessed that magical moment when the sun rose and shot brilliant rays of light onto the Canyon walls, instantly converting deep, pitch black space into searing brilliant gold, yellow ocre, raw sienna, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna and copper, painting the Canyon walls with a brilliant, vast colorscape of shapes that were formed millions of years ago. As I traveled the South Rim throughout the day, the sun washed out colors to brilliant white and palette of pastels at noon, then softened into a mauven haze of deep violet as the sun set below the horizon.

Note: "This painting was originally photographed, then I painted in my Studio to control the medium, not en plein air, as it was a very complicated painting requiring wet-on-wet, multi-layer rock formations, then dry brush surface and details. I studied the geology and attempted to evoke the expanse of time and simulate the awesome grandeur of the Grand Canyon with a sense of vastness that engulfed me." - Jan Shaw King
